A New Beginning for a Melbourne Classic: Entrecôte by Brahman Perera.

Brahman Perera has lovingly crafted a grand ‘forever home’ for the famed Parisian eatery, Entrecôte, nestled in the bustling Melbourne suburb of Prahran. Inspired by the treasured institutions that once lined Greville Street — the Continental, Cafe Blu Pols and the Candy Bar — Entrecôte is driven by a sense of grace, joy and conviviality, offering memorable scenes for patrons to dine, drink and dwell from breakfast to cocktail hour.

From the timber shopfront, with cane bistro chairs spilling onto the street, Entrecôte evokes a nostalgic Parisian café feel. In the entryway, patterned mosaic floors, wainscot panelling and accents of deep gold, periwinkle and royal blue create a rich yet approachable dining space bathed in natural light — the perfect place to step in for a morning coffee and croissant with views to the street. Beyond, a dramatic vaulted ceiling is flanked by an intimate dining room and grand Belle-Epoque inspired bar. Wainscot panelled, marble-topped and finished with hand-painted bar lamps, the bar invites patrons to delight in the brasserie atmosphere for an aperitif. A grand wall of sweeping, Art Nouveau style screens filled with rippled amber glass elegantly frame the liquor and wine display — a refined and graceful gesture, interspersed with antique mirror and vintage wall sconces.

A central waiters’ station adds privacy to the dining room. Here, antique French oak panelling sourced from a chateau on the outskirts of Paris, sumptuous velvet banquettes, custom hand-painted Matisse-inspired linen and burnt caramel toned carpets bring textured warmth to the interior. Custom glass wall sconces create a candle-lit glow, while an ornate Swarovski crystal chandelier conjures a sense of stately old-world opulence. At the rear, an open chateau kitchen and communal dining space creates a more energetic and informal area, set amongst the activity of Entrecôte’s kitchen and towering seafood bar.

A varied landscape of hand-glazed cream and white tiles pay homage to the nuanced, aged finishes of traditional French kitchens, while playful turned timber legs speak to the domestic legacy of stories shared around the kitchen table. Beyond the dining room sits a lush Hôtel Costes-inspired courtyard filled with cane bistro chairs, manicured planting and striped awnings.

Though the restaurant is generous in scale, a series of linen curtains and valances frame tailored vistas through and between spaces, crafting intimacy and intrigue, while offering diverse dining experiences for new and returning guests.

True to Perera’s signature design sensibility, Entrecôte merges tailored, romantic, whimsical and collected elements, delivering a series of dining atmospheres to both honour the traditions of the well-loved site, and express the comfort, grace and delight the beloved Melbourne restaurant is known for.
