Hi, my name is Justine and I’m from Upon A Fold. If you’re not already familiar with Upon A Fold, it’s a little something I started about a year ago to satisfy my appetite for all things paper + folds. I’m a bit of a ‘fold’ addict, so when Dana asked me to be a guest blogger here at yellowtrace, I knew exactly what I wanted to blog about – furniture and folds.

Actually, I’ve narrowed it down to just chairs (there are so many good ones!). It seems the relationship between furniture and folds is not such an unusual thing. I came across so many clever designs, these are just some of my favourites. All of them have been inspired by the art of paper folding, known as Origami. They are minimal, sleek, and oh so stylish. I’m secretly hoping someone will be inspired to fold paper scale models of them all. Anyone up for the challenge?

Happy folding and thanks a lot Dana for the opportunity to talk folds here at yellowtrace.

Justine xo

Origami Chair (above) + Oshibori Stool (below) by So Takahashi Design. These two are my top picks. I’d like one of each thanks!

Folder Chair by Stefan Schöning. Made from a polypropylene sheet, which has been cut, scored and folded.

Folded Chair by Enoc Armengol. Good looks, ergonomics and functionality found from a single stainless steel sheet.

Folding Chair by Christopher Mark Johnson. Mixing materials – a nice combination of Polypropylene and Beech.

Origami Chair by Form Us With Love. Nice folds from Swedish creative trio, Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmer.

Rose Gold Origami Chair by Wolfson Design. Fancy a bit of 24 carat gold leaf luxury?

Flux Chair by Flexible Design. Flux Chairs are great for indoor and outdoor use. They fold flat for easy storage and can be assembled in just seconds.

Bent by Stefan Diez and Christophe de la Fontaine. Perforated folds allow for unique shapes, not previously possible with traditional metal bending methods.

Aluminium Chair by Tobias Labarque. Made from a single piece of perforated aluminium.

Origami Chair by Maani Design. Laser cut, bent steel brilliance.

.ORI sto. by Jakub Piotr Kalinowski. Love the way these fold and stack.

Hommage Chair by Cecilie Manz. This experimental Hommage Chair or otherwise known as the Bookbinders Chair is made from solid maple, aeroplane veneer and canvas tape. Everything Cecilie Manz designs is beautiful.

Grillage Easy Chair by François Azambourg. Folded, crumpled and welded metal magic!

Nature of Material by Bakery Design. The idea behind this design was to combine straight origami like folds with natural folds. One forms naturally as a reaction to the other.

Origami Chair by Vasiliy Butenko. A chic modern dining chair don’t you think?

    Wow – amazing!

If I was the Captain of The USS Enterprise or a Bond villain in a space station orbiting earth, I would demand the Origami Chair by Form Us with Love. Its just so sci-fi cool. (Now there are two words that don’t normally go together… Sci-fi & Cool – Have I just created an Oxymoron?)

I do desire that rose gold chair. It just looks so foxy!

Love it all, thank you Justine!
