Workment have designed Kyeokyeoi (KK2), a tiny bakery in Seoul specialising in croissants. The studio focused on a strong concept that made the most of the small 20-square-metre footprint while delivering a visual appeal as alluring from the outside as inside.Inspired by layers of pastry dough, the studio looked to visually tier the interior without crowding the space. To do this, while celebrating the art of the croissants themselves, the studio utilised glass as a key material.Translucent cabinets are stacked in a row with croissants displayed on top. Below, Workment uv-printed images of Swedish artist Claes Oldenburg’s ‘pastry case’ alongside photos of KK2’s own croissants.Eert Mangwon Café & Tea Shop in Seoul by Workment. This new dessert spot recontructs familiar building materials in an unfamiliar way in a fresh take... The glass cabinets are placed obliquely to deliver visual depth within the otherwise uncluttered space. The cabinets also line up to reveal a complete image if seen at the right angle. The rest of the space is rigidly minimal, hero-ing the croissants and graphic images. Storage cabinets on the walls are arranged with layers in a similar flow as the glass stands. A monochrome palette of white plastered walls and an exposed concrete ceiling contrast against the sleekness of the glass, designed much like everything else to make the croissants stand out more—the result is a masterful execution of a strong singular concept.
