Ubalt Architects have renovated a typical 17th Century apartment located in the heart of the Marais in Paris. Within the 36sqm interior, there is a bedroom, a dining room, a lounge, an office, a kitchen and a bathroom. The designers have created an illusion of a larger space by visually lengthening the flat. The space was transformed while keeping the character of the old in tact.

A compact and efficient ‘technical block’ including the bathroom, WC and kitchen is located at one end of the flat in order to free up maximum space for the bedroom and the living room. The bedroom is separated from the living-room by an accordion partition, designed to create hidden access to the bedroom. The central space contained between the ‘technical block’ and the bedroom is dedicated to the living-room and the office. Every piece of furniture is custom-made and has a specific function that fits in such a way as to create a perfect composition.

The aim of the project is to create an illusion of larger space. Like the partition, no piece of furniture reaches the ceiling in order to expose the beams. The same visual continuity is facilitated at the ground level with the use hollow joints and mirror covered furniture and joinery legs. Storage units such as the closet, the shelves, the kitchen and the library are laid in the longitudinal axis of the flat, increasing the impression of length. On the contrary, the living areas, office and bar, are laid out in the opposite direction for contrast and clarity.

The apartment has been entirely painted in white to emphasise the specific texture of each material, and highlight the contrast between the Old and New.
