All you exacting minimalism-loving freaks, with perfectly groomed facial hair (and that’s just the girls), predominantly black and/or navy coloured clothes wearers, coffee snobs, lovers of A.P.C. and Acne – this place is for you. This shrine-to-minimalism was created by combining parts of two completely different buildings. To make things even more complicated, the buildings had a completely different feel as each one hailed from a different era to the another. Alas, in the hands of the capable Berlin-based architecture practice, lead by Thomas Bendel, the apartment now feels congruent and 100% coherent, with the interior stripped back to it’s bare bones, and rooms flowing seamlessly from one another. The architect embraced a subtle and almost a monastic feel within the interior, setting out to preserve as much of the historical layers as possible. Sharp new insertions such as the smooth white stair, sliding wall panels and sharp kitchen joinery offset the roughness of the concrete ceiling and provide a level of finesse.Although this apartment is way, way, waaaay to minimalist and spare for the reality of life for most of us (i.e. families with children in particular), the rooms provide a pretty sexy blank canvas on which I would happily paint my life on in all it’s messy rainbow colours.
