The cultural and architectural diversity found in villages across India, arguably the prime unit of habitation, is synonymous with the identity of the country itself. Contemplating various village-like settlements and their inevitable change under the influence of globalization drove Delhi-based design firm Portal92 in conceptualizing The Village Café.

“Studying the dichotomy in schools of thought regarding what villages represent and the interpretations of their relevance, and ever-changing state was where we started our ideation,” explains Portal92 design team.

Located in the city of Moradabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the venue comprises a multi-level, 600sqm space. Textures and volumes were designed in reference to experiences and scenes reminiscent of rural Indian settlements. Multiple areas and pathways throughout the cafe give the illusion of an intimate and organic dwelling, wherein the regulars have their own routine and are seldom taken by new visitors. In light of this, shaded gathering spaces are semi-shielded from direct view of the larger sitting zones.

“The intent became to design a space which represents a lucid memory of a village for today’s ‘Urban Indian’, looking for a drink down nostalgic lane,” said the designers.

Terracotta walls and abundant green plants were chosen to generate a surreal impression of rural settlements. The terracotta plaster was custom formulated after multiple trials to lend warmth and vibrancy to the space. Exposed concrete rings cast in iron sheets puncture the walls, offering portal glimpses across the space. The plants were locally curated to ensure survival with natural ease in the surrounding climate. The city has a thriving brass handicrafts industry, with decorative brass vessels referencing the local trade. The central courtyard is paved with rough slabs of black Kadappa stone, sourced locally from India.
