THE QVEST Hotel in Cologne, Germany

Combining Neo-Gothic architecture with an epic museum-worthy collection of furniture, photography and art, THE QVEST Hotel links history and modernity in an exquisitely curated way. Located in a quiet square in the heart of Cologne, the hotel is owned by QVEST magazine editor Michael Kaune, who revelled in the opportunity to bring to life the pages of his niche design, culture and art publication. In fact, much of the 34-room hotel is furnished with Kaune’s personal collection of original Bauhaus pieces, from the likes of Arne Jacobsen, Eames and Le Corbusier.

Formerly the Historic Archive of Cologne, the 1897 heritage-listed building has been impeccably restored during a two-year renovation. Much of the Neo-Gothic architectural frame remains perfectly intact, along with the original materials like dark-oiled parquet flooring and marble columns. The lobby features a stunning Belgian bluestone and brass front desk, and in lieu of a typical gift store, QVEST offers a gallery space where guests can choose a keepsake from a carefully curated selection of design objects and furniture.

All 34 rooms and suites are cut differently and befittingly furnished with individual character. Some of the suites feature impressive six-meter high ceilings, while the Salon Suite (our pick of the bunch) features hand-painted medieval wooden ceilings from 1390, ornate gothic windows and a grand piano.
