Studio Vit's Striking Range of Minimalist Lighting & Furniture.

Cone Lights by Studio Vit.

I’ve been a huge admirer of Studio Vit for a couple of years now, and I cannot believe it’s taken this long for us to dedicate a post to this clever duo. Major oversight! Founded in 2010 by Helena Jonasson & Veronica Dagnert – Swedish designers living in London – Studio Vit design and create beautiful products, lighting and furniture with an extraordinary attention to detail. Coming from disparate backgrounds – Helena with a BA in Industrial Design and Veronica with a BA in Fashion and a MA in Communication Design – the duo complement each other with a broadened perspective on their work which is fuelled by a joint vision.

I first met the lovely pair during my visit to Milan for Salone del Mobile in 2013. They were exhibiting at SaloneSatellite with a striking range of minimalist Globe Lights that instantly caught my attention. Coincidentally, I was reunited with Veronica during my last year’s trip to Copenhagen, while waiting in a toilet queue at &Tradition’s new showroom launch (I swear, best things happen to me in toilet queues). Studio Vit where there to present their Marble Lights collection for the Danish company. So you see, this is why it’s crazy I’ve never told you about my love for these clever girls before, but we are here today to fix that.

The design duo’s most recent lighting product, Cone Lights, is a collection that celebrates the opposites. It consists of two elementary forms, the cone and the sphere, that are combined in different ways. Spheres in handblown glass and cones in matt white or polished metal make up lights that cast light from the ceiling, wall or floor. Cone lights is currently being exhibited at Etage Projects from 20 February until 24 April 2015.

Marble Lights by Studio Vit. Originating from an archetypal bulb and socket, the Marble light collection consists of mouth-blown borosilicate glass spheres and Italian Biano Carrara cylindrical marble lamp holders in various sizes which can be freely combined. Marble lights includes table, floor and pendant lights.

Globe Lights by Studio Vit. The Globe lights comprise matte ceramic spheres on long flexes, which can be used on their own, grouped together or directed onto the bowls. Each steel bowl is painted gloss white and they can either be placed on a surface or wall-mounted. Light from small ceramic pendants is bounced off large steel bowls.

Studio Vit’s main interest lies in the interrelation and juxtaposition of elementary forms, materials and volume and how these elements create compositions in a space. Materiality is central to their work and each material is valued for it’s inherent characteristics, whether it be weight, texture or it’s colour. As the work builds on elementary forms there is a natural continuation from one project to another and an idea might develop and overlap from one project into the next.

The aim with their collections is to create products that are simple yet refined, and generate a juxtaposition of volumes, materials and weights. The designers take a long term view, delivering long-lasting products that fit into any environment, and to be cherished for a lifetime. Major extreme love!
