Merging day spa, spinal clinic, pilates and yoga studios, Relinque Urban Retreat by Studio Tate is a holistic, inclusive wellness space in Melbourne’s north-east, anchored by intelligent planning and layered materials. Collaborating with a specialist spa consultant, the interior is authentic and comfortable, underpinned by a gender-inclusive design approach.

With the site sitting at an expansive 800 square metres, Studio Tate crafted a series of touchpoints with tailored sightlines giving patrons the autonomy to navigate the venue with confidence. Central to the design was a functional, accessible and intuitive floor plan with the spaces arranged in a circular configuration to encourage a continuous experience of the venue.

Luxurious accents are balanced with raw and tactile materials, ensuring the space feels welcoming to all. On arrival, a concrete aggregate floor is complemented by a richly layered reception space. A composition of figured green marble, honed granite and hand-glazed Japanese tiles welcomes visitors, while a plinth of bush-hammered granite is topped with leather seat pads and emerald green joinery.

“It was important to create a textural earthiness that evokes the senses, while striking a balance between sophistication and approachability,” explains Senior Associate at Studio Tate, Emily Addison.

The spa’s curved corridor, finished in polished plaster, invites an animated interplay of shadow and light, bordered by glimpses to two generous guest lounges. A series of individually contained treatment rooms are warmly layered with granite, timber and glazed tiles in shades of deep russet and sage green and overhead a backlit ceiling feature creates a halo of gently diffused light.

In the yoga and meditation room, a timber floor and ceiling create a sense of warmth. Joinery stretches the length of the space, neatly accommodating guest pigeonholes, yoga equipment and a water point in a refined and tactile gesture. Opposite, a mosaic-lined steam room creates a rounded, cocoon-like interior, opening dramatically to a light-filled ice room. An ice well shrouded in Japanese ceramic tiles is framed as a central altar, inviting guests to engage with regenerative hot and cold contrast therapy.

The skilful configuration and layering of spaces craft a calm and engaging sensibility that balances the interior’s experiential qualities with its operational requirements.
