Situated in scenic Chilliwack, British Columbia, Studio Roslyn renovates a historic site to create a contemporary interpretation of a boutique brewing space. Bricklayer Brewing utilises upcycled materials, thoughtful details, and intricate brickwork to create a forward-thinking destination where the community can congregate and celebrate.

The area in which Bricklayer Brewing sits has been subjected to a historic revitalisation in recent years, which aligns this project with similar efforts. In an almost uncanny turn of events, the space was also once used as a tavern two centuries ago, being the first place in the area to serve beers.

The journey for their clients started from brewing beers out of their garage, so when their business expanded, they sought out Studio Roslyn to create a hospitality destination that’s unapologetically bold, unique and nostalgic. There was a big focus on human experience, and so the design brief was to create a space that people can gather while nodding to the past of the building and its context.

To create a warm and approachable interior while preserving the historical context, the design team used original shiplap ceiling boards and decorative bricks as partitions and tables in the main tasting room. These materials were paired with ceramic tiles, reclaimed brick, dark stained oak and brass details for a more modern atmosphere. A series of artworks and objects, including hand-painted murals that the client’s children created, adorn the space to create an even more approachable and homely ambience.

With a total of 90 seats (50 inside and 40 outside), the brewery floor plan is divided into zones for various social engagement levels and different groups of people – also made possible by a cumulation of communal tables, a long bar and intimate dining areas. Views to the production space create a sense of entertainment and suspense by allowing visitors to smell and seeing the beverage before tasting it.
