Fugazzi Basement in Adelaide transports guests into a rich underground lair, with a movie-set aesthetic where boundaries between reality and fantasy intertwine in an intimate space. Designed by Studio Gram, the project sees the designers return to an old stomping ground, having completed the original Italo-New York-inspired bar and dining room upstairs just two years ago.

Descending the stairs into the dimly lit space, reflective surfaces, sleek two-toned timber, marble and geometric tile patterns are layered to evoke a sense of nostalgia that’s both decadent and indulgent. Occupying the basement level—formerly an underutilised, uninviting service space—Fugazzi’s latest venture now translates as a luxurious retreat, rich in materiality, colour and craftsmanship.

The brief called for a versatile space capable of accommodating various types of events, from formal dining to private parties and conferences. The owners wanted the new space to integrate seamlessly within the existing restaurant operations yet infused with a sense of intrigue. Each space portrays its own unique identity, yet with a harmonious blend of aesthetics that are identifiable under the Fugazzi brand.

From intricate wall panels to meticulously crafted furniture, the use of bespoke timberwork showcases the dedication to craftsmanship and adds warmth and ambience. Paired with a considered lighting palette, a mood and atmosphere has been meticulously curated. Studio Gram carefully selected and positioned lighting fixtures to create a captivating interplay of light and shadow, not to mention drama to the space. Mirror-panelled walls create a sense of spaciousness and visual trickery, adding to this sense of intrigue.

Intriguing yes, but not to be sold short, the functional dining and event requirements were also carefully considered, resulting in a flexible and adaptive space, capable of comfortably accommodating 64 patrons seated or 150 patrons standing.

By paying homage to Fugazzi’s existing brand identity, and incorporating features with subtle shifts in materiality and ambience, a harmonious blend of familiarity and novelty was achieved.
