Call me a massive Wog and a tragic patriot, but my heart swells with an enormous amount of pride each time I am able to shine a little spotlight on architecture and design coming from the motherland. Let’s face it – this doesn’t happen very frequently, although I often dream of doing more in this department, and on much grander scale, and perhaps some day I will. Alas, that’s a story for another day…House C and House D by Studio AUTORI are a part of the ‘Terra Panonica’ estate, located in Serbian town Mokrin (near Kikinda, in Vojvodina region). ‘Terra Panonica‘ is a cultural complex established for creative and leisure activities, with it’s program focusing on cultural projects, design, education, agriculture and social development.House C and House D are designed for a wide range of activities. They occupy the positions of removed utility structures of the former rural household. In form, structure and material they invoke associations with the utility sheds of the contemporary local households which are essentially just parts of the courtyard covered by a steal canopy. In that sense, the interior of both houses is designed to evoke an impression of such a canopy rather than an enclosed interior space. This feature is further accentuated by the same materialisation of the shell in the interior and on the façade.House C represents an experience point – a meeting place for all – an entirely open multifunctional space for the most diverse events: presentations, film screenings, concerts, exhibitions, food tasting etc. House D is a universal workshop designed for different types of creative work. It is a contemporary craft workshop for artists, designers, developers and researchers, conceived as an integrated two-level flowing open space.
