Melbourne-based Studio 11:11 transformed an open-plan warehouse shell in Auckland into a warm, inviting space for the local Grey Lynn community at Basecamp Power Yoga. The studio’s character celebrates the rawness of the existing architecture, embracing a ‘perfectly imperfect’ place to practice. Aligned with Studio 11:11’s ethos, the project explores notions of functionality, simplicity and craftsmanship.

Basecamp is driven by a philosophy to create a solid foundation in life, which Studio 11:11 translated into the design. The main studio is set on the upper floor, representing a physical elevation. A staircase rises upward from the ground level, aligning perfectly with the central axis of the existing roofline. This forms a transition zone for members, allowing yogis to make the mental and physical journey upward to their mats for a heightened and focused experience.

Uneven, rough textures were used to marry the original and new built elements. Washed timber and textured wall render create a tactile palette, whilst exposed off-form concrete walls and custom hot-rolled steel elements bring a grounding sense of strength to the power yoga studio. Natural cork lines the main studio floor, bringing a softening warmth to the surface under bodies during yoga practice. Studio 11:11 were conscious of understanding the impact of the built environment on wellbeing throughout the interior.

A sculptural coat rack is a central focus of the entry space, the result of a collaboration with local metal craftsman SaintLeo. A large raw basalt rock lies at its base, with the seamless steel insertion emerging from the natural stone to create a refined, yet abstract furniture piece. The designers built an environment that is alive with tactility and natural materials, yet keeps the strength and gym-like foundations that reflect Basecamp’s core values of resilience, empowerment and adventure.
