Following from the success of it’s launch collection earlier this year, the team at SP01 have worked with Australian designer Tom Fereday for their second range, SP01 Outdoor – an elegant series of chairs, tables and stools. Made in Italy by leading manufacturers, the range was designed and tested to withstand the toughest of environment – the Australian outdoors.Fereday has worked on a diverse range of projects and was the winner of the Space Furniture Design residency in 2014, which saw him working with Marcel Wanders and Moooi in The Netherlands.“Tom being Australian was an important consideration for us when working on our second collection for SP01. As an Australian brand, we wanted to include an Australian designer in the range early in our launch. The fact that it is Tom we are working with, and that we helped him via the Space Moooi residency, the mentoring he received from Casper Vissers while there, is a nice completion of that circle for us,” shares Michelle McEwen, SP01’s Group Marketing Manager. As with the original collection, SP01 Outdoor is 100% manufactured in Italy using leading manufactures. The brand has taken extraordinary steps to ensure the product is superior in quality. “Proximity to the sea and exposure all year round to the elements provides challenges for furniture to survive, so having an Australian designer work on the collection brings a feeling of confidence. We then spent an enormous amount of time making sure the manufacturing process exceeded international standard,” explained Matt Lorrain, SP01’s Head of Product development and Design. For example, salt mist testing for this collection was done for 1500 hours. To put this in context, 800 hours is the standard test for the automotive panels for many car brands.Since it’s launch in March 2016, SP01 has launched internationally and has been picked up by a US distributor Modern Principle, with a new showroom in New York.SP01 is available via Space Furniture in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.Related Post: Little Trace Of // Tom Fereday.
