Australian design brand SP01 has partnered with surfboard and fashion designer and founder of Haydenshapes, Hayden Cox, on an exclusive, locally-made resin furniture capsule released this month.

A distinctly Australian combination of laid-back cool and casual sophistication underpins the ‘Refract’ collection, comprising a console, side table, coffee table and resin sculpture surfboard. The launch collection of resin pieces was handcrafted in Sydney and will be available exclusively via Space Furniture.

It’s a natural fit for the globally-minded Australian furniture brand whose fundamentals lie in being welcoming, friendly and familiar, but with an edge. Combining contemporary local design with collaborators from Italy, Denmark, United Kingdom and Australia, SP01 creates beautifully detailed, hand-finished furniture for elevated everyday living.

A blend of delicate craftsmanship and lineal minimalism, Refract collection’s distinct materiality plays the leading role in shape, opacity and colour selection. With a hand feel of stone and a visual likeness to glass, the internal catalyst textures of resin allow light to shift and refract—like the sun through seawater. The stacked linear shapes that form the table bases take design cues from a wave set. The slabs glow at the tip and deepen in colour as each prism expands.

“The design process was an exploration of the relationship between the material and light,” says Hayden. “Working with intersected forms and shapes of varying thickness and transparency, each piece has been designed to uniquely interact with its space—ever changing its hue over the day and viewpoint.”

Group CEO of Space, Poliform and SP01, Leighton Clarke, said that Hayden’s style and design sensibility embodied the brand’s own ethos of relaxed but considered living. “The collaboration with Hayden felt very natural. A multi-disciplinary Australian designer best known for Haydenshapes, his eponymous performance surfboard company he founded at age 15, Hayden Cox’s patented parabolic carbon fibre frame technology FutureFlex revolutionised surfboard design and influenced innovation globally in a way that has not been seen since the 1970s. His Hypto Krypto surfboard model is said to be the highest-selling performance surfboard in surf history and is a multiple recipient of ‘Surfboard of The Year’ across Australia and the USA where it continues to be a number one seller.

No stranger to the innovative application of resin, Hayden has previously partnered on collaborative works with Award Winning Interior Designer Blainey North, high-profile New York contemporary Artist Daniel Arsham, and most recently with Akin Atelier for the AGNSW’s Sydney Modern project Gallery Shop which we featured here.
