Brutalist Beauty Meets Japanese Philosophy at Otaku Al Qana.

In Abu Dhabi’s emerging Al Qana district, shell+core imagines a striking evolution of Otaku’s design narrative. While the eatery’s existing UAE locations embrace minimalist Japanese aesthetics, this waterfront venue ventures into more experimental territory, where raw materiality and fluid forms create an atmospheric dining experience.

The space defies conventional boundaries, drawing inspiration from Tadao Ando’s architectural principles. Bold concrete volumes contrast with warm materials, creating a dialogue between brutalist elements and organic textures. The designers have preserved existing structural elements, transforming them into sculptural features. Most notably, the central column stands as an artistic centrepiece, partially wrapped in rich wood and illuminated to cast dramatic shadows across the aggregate concrete floor.

Self-described as a coffee house, concept store and collective hub, the multi-hyphenate venue stands out as a hidden gem and the first of its kind for Dubai.

The thoughtful interpretation of wabi-sabi philosophy sets this hospitality project apart. The design embraces the inherent beauty of imperfection in wood, concrete, and stone, allowing these materials to age and evolve naturally. A stunning Californian burl wood feature introduces organic patterns and warmth, while carefully placed vintage furniture pieces reflect the client’s curatorial eye.

The waterfront setting plays a crucial role in the spatial experience of Otaku. Flowing forms echo throughout the interior, while reflective surfaces and considered lighting create ever-changing patterns that respond to natural light. Strategic placement of large plants creates intimate zones without compromising the space’s inviting simplicity.
