Scala Studio have described their project, Muntaner Residence in Barcelona as a “haven of peace in the midst of the city’s bustle”. The home stands as a relaxing enclave, a palette of soft, natural materials lulling its inhabitants into a deep sense of calm, allowing them to completely escape the outside world.Created in collaboration with architect Antonio Spalleta, Scala Studio describe the design process as highly collaborative, with the client playing a large part in the project development. Initial discussions made it clear that the existing architectural elements of the original building would be maintained as much as possible, designers outlining, “the high ceilings, the mouldings, the large windows, and the outdoor area immediately made our work much easier since the container itself was already spectacular”. The two different zones are connected with a light-filled exterior courtyard that allows each space to feel light and airy. The garden, framed by sleek black window frames, begins to bleed back into the interior spaces, creating a beautiful atmosphere.A collection of warm materials sit alongside one another, coming together to create calming, deeply relaxing spaces. Preloved pieces mesh with new contemporary injections creating a layered and eclectic scheme. Timber parquet flooring saved from a 60’s Croatian sawmill covers the floor, while stainless-steel covers all the surfaces in the kitchen. Two languages – one representing the past and one representing the future, co-exist in perfect harmony. Related: Verd & Go Restaurant in Barcelona by Scala Studio. [Images courtesy of Scala Studio.
