Sarah Ellison Introduces La Banda Capsule Collection.

Inspired by the Italian word for ‘Stripe’, Sarah Ellison’s capsule collection ‘La Banda’ is a celebration and exploration of workmanship, form and structure through the Australian design lens. The collection consists of a side table, a console and a decorative screen.

In designing La Banda, Ellison was initially inspired to collaborate with her workshop to create some dynamic new timber finishing techniques. As a result of this development phase, each piece is made up of a selection of ash and walnut 5mm timber veneer, constructed to create a banded design atop timber and steel framing.

“The starting point for the capsule was the banding technique we developed in the workshop,” says Ellison of the process. “We knew what it would look like as a material but I hadn’t decided what we would create from it. I began on paper like I usually do, sketching and playing around with some shapes and forms. I knew that the striped effect would create quite a lot of noise once placed into a space so I decided to design secondary furniture pieces such as side tables, consoles and screens.”

Within the collection is a side table (Pepé), a console table (Luca) and a standing screen (Valentina). Each piece is designed by Ellison to provide a dynamic and sculptural accent to any space.

“La Banda is ultimately an exercise in craftsmanship, the excitement for me is in the beauty of the timber, so I kept the forms of the collection very considered with some gentle curves and delicate proportions. My hope is that La Banda will bring an unexpected level of excitement to people’s homes.”
