Sans-Arc has implemented a less is more approach within cafe Midi in  Melbourne‘s Richmond. Entering the project mid-way, the designers looked at integrating a series of subtle interventions that seamlessly tie into the existing architecture. Graphic and sculptural elements sit against the backdrop of a brutalist concrete building. From the architecture down to the micro decorative elements, contrast was utilised in material and form.

A concrete exterior, stainless shopfront and terrazzo floors provided the base. Galvanised steel was introduced to sit against the stainless, concrete-coloured polished plaster to bring the exterior of the building inside, then recycled spotted gum, green upholstered and a stepped, white tiled wall was added for warmth and fun.

“The clients for Midi were some of the best we’ve had. Incredibly laid back, yet trusting and authentic,” explains the design team. “They have owned and operated several cafes in Melbourne, and bring no-frills, super friendly service with a high-quality product. They are really, really good at what they do but aren’t at all pretentious about it. This underpinned our approach to the space, keeping it open and relaxed, the corner banquette seat directed towards the counter so staff and customers are encouraged to interact.”

The materials are natural, raw, and authentic, with one pop of colour materialising in the deep green banquette. The ceiling has been acoustically treated, making the concrete shell comfortable on the ears, and the counter divided in half to create an efficient workflow and access to the kitchen for staff.

The design prioritises performance and operation, with the intention to do as much with as little as possible. Natural and seamless the design acts as a subtle intervention, rather than overtly bold or eye-catching it is beautifully effective.

Giving consideration to the smallest touchpoints; signage, table tops, a stacking of raw and slightly lux materials and a folded galvanised steel backrest to integrate with the giant sliding door, Sans-Arc worked closely with local artisans to move the project quickly from design to construction. They worked with Inner West Joinery and Imagebox to create custom printed table tops and Tom Clayton and Made Visual on the external signage.

With a less is more approach, this effortless intervention by Sans-Arc feels open and relaxed. The simple composition and raw materials sit in humbling dialogue with the brutalist building that houses it.
