Ross Gardam took over a brutalist space ‘under construction’ to present the studio’s latest editioned pieces. The elegant objects take centre stage against the distressed concrete architecture including the Ora Desk Lamp pictured above.

A new product for the studio, the Mass table is an assemblage of natural and industrial forms, including waste stone offcuts that ground the object in stasis. A quiet experiment for the studio, the object is intended to inform future production.

Ross Gardam takes over a brutalist space ‘under construction’ to present the studio’s latest editioned pieces and a new collection of luminaires. The elegant pieces adorn the distressed concrete architecture, illuminating from the darkness. The project marks the brand’s continued journey to define a unique tension between object and space.

The Melbourne-based industrial designer is no stranger to finding unique settings for his creations. Just think back to the Pavilion—a digital space launched last year in collaboration with Mr P Studios, a Brutalist space set amongst the dense Australian bushland imagined by Gardam.

Given Gardam’s long-standing fascination with Brutalism, it’s no surprise this latest project shares a design sensibility with the Pavilion. “I am always enamoured by brutalist structures, the volume and scale of what typically is a singular gesture in form,” elaborates Gardam.

For its latest campaign, the studio borrowed an ‘under construction site’ from Melbourne-based architecture and interior design studio Splinter Society Architecture. The work-in-progress space offered an intimate setting full of rich surfaces and found objects, allowing Gardam’s new and revamped objects to dialogue with raw concrete walls, cool glass, and scattered pavers stacked in a corner. “It was a rewarding experience, curating the edition objects in this unique space, playing with contrasting forms and soft warm light truly reimagined each piece,” Gardam continues.

Gardam also took this opportunity to launch the new Mass table, which will be presented formally at the upcoming Melbourne Design Week this month. Exploring the fundamental equilibrium of form and mass, the table represents a quiet experiment for the studio intended to inform future production objects. An assemblage of natural and industrial forms, the object utilises waste stone offcuts to ground the object in static balance.

New iterations of the Volant collection, first released at last year’s Milan Design Week, also make an appearance. The growing collection now includes a single and double wall light (below) and a new large vertical drop configuration (above).

The studio’s Vestige table lamp can be found amongst the construction site, its clean and translucent finish glowing against the fluted pattern of recycled concrete blocks. Other pieces to be editioned can also be spotted, including the Ora Raw desk lamp, Breeze Raw side table, Hemera Accorsi table lamp and the Noctiluca Dark chandelier.

Shot by Haydn Cattach, the space also features the new iterations of the Volant collection which was first released at last year’s Milan Design Week. A single and double wall light, along with a new large vertical drop configuration, round out the award-winning collection of luminaires.
