There is something magical about Haute Couture. The art form celebrates tradition and precision, as a sumptuous narrative of luxury and fantasy weaved through the designs. Inspired by this world, Ross Didier’s new Apparel seating collection creates a visual signature and an enveloping, sensory experience of formal luxury.

Combining a high level of artistry and creativity with a mastery of form, the references are clear — from the belted waistline, the sculpted torso, precision-engineered patterns, leg highlights, lapel detailing, and the ability for each piece to be uniquely personalised through the selection of beautiful fabrics.

For Didier, who has long intuited a world where art meets design, there is a lot to be gleaned from fashion’s highest order.

“From the runways of admired fashion houses, we experience the phenomena of meticulous creations that combine perfect silhouettes with breathtaking shapes,” he says. “The essence of Haute Couture celebrates individuality and makes the wearer radiate with confidence, delight, and a sense of abundance. It’s this feeling we have captured in the Apparel Collection where you are invited to take your place and become enveloped in well-earned indulgence.”

As with all Didier collections, a rich narrative emerges throughout the creative process, and with Apparel the seed was sown as the studio looked to research costume design and high-fashion construction. Known for his bold yet approachable designs, Didier was galvanised by couture while staying true to the ethos of his practice.

“I was enchanted to watch numerous fashion parades from early Balenciaga and Dior, through the elaborate shows of Gaultier and Kenzo, to recent Prada, and experimented with hand-made prototypes until the curvaceous forms and intimate detailing achieved a classic styling with premium comfort,” he explains.

“This range has a very close connection to corset figuration and was created by building a voluptuous form using layered shapes, like with life drawing.” — Ross Didier

With a background in both Fine-Art sculpture and Industrial Design, and a career that began at London’s theatre scene, fabricating all types of set props and being exposed to majestic costume designs, Melbourne-based Didier has long been ready to tackle the world of fashion.

“This range, and especially the signature wingback chair, has a very close connection to corset figuration and was created by building a voluptuous form using layered shapes, like with life drawing,” explains Ross.

In a way, this wasn’t such a jump for the Australian design studio that already works a lot like a fashion atelier. Open to boundless manufacturing techniques, materials and ways of thinking, Didier experiments and makes prototypes by hand to then collaborate with a wide range of skilled craftspeople and factories on the finished product.

Each Apparel piece can be custom upholstered in sumptuous fabrics or leathers, to celebrate each customer’s unique individuality. “It’s exciting to see our Didier Studio provide custom pieces with a client experience similar to visiting a fashion atelier,” shares Ross.

With its voluptuous shapes and intricate detailing, the Apparel collection blends engineering and utilitarianism with unabashed luxury. With Haute Couture thriving on modernity and simple, clean, beautifully constructed design, it’s no wonder Didier feels right at home.
