Australian brand Robert Plumb has a longstanding reputation for durable timber outdoor furniture that is designed and built to last. For a recent expansion of the product offering, they turned to David Harrison of Design Daily, having worked with him on re-imaging the Robert Plumb showroom interior. The three-fold brief involved fine-tuning existing collection, sourcing imported product and designing a metal capsule range.

“Robert Plumb wanted something different to what they had, a product that is visually finer and more streamlined, designed to give a completely different look”, explains Harrison.

Harrison conceived the Ribbon Range, which takes inspiration from Bauhaus tubular metal furniture reinterpreted in a flat steel bar. The collection is designed for outdoor use, but works comfortably in indoor settings too.

“The benefit of metal is that spans are greater than in timber, so this enabled me to move to a much lighter framework and create an uncluttered and open range of furniture pieces with an extremely minimal appearance”, says Harrison.

Given Australia’s harsh sun and extreme UV conditions, Harrison gave close consideration to the longevity of the furniture. The stainless steel base structure is given an etch-prime paint finish and a durable polyester powder coat. The frame comes in 11 standard colours with custom options, which complement the Linnen outdoor fabric range by Westbury Textiles. There is also an option for a raw 316 marine-grade, garnet blasted stainless steel finish. Each piece has a distinctive aesthetic feature that doubles as functional, such as a twist in the arm of the chair that doubles as an elbow rest.

“The collection’s concept revolves around a continuous ribbon of metal, a mobius strip. The loop sled legs reduce visual clutter and upholstery is kept low and sleek,” says Harrison.

Sourcing an exclusive import range that further shifted the dial for Robert Plumb was another challenge. As a longtime admirer of the work of Willy Guhl, Harrison suggested a range of lightweight cement planters, seating and lighting reinforced with fibre by Swisspearl. The iconic Splindel planter and Loop chair are classics designed by Willy Guhl in the 1950s, however many other contemporary pieces are designed in partnership with the Ecal University in Switzerland.

“The connecting thread in the range is that everything exploits the properties of this enduring and sustainable material. It can be moulded into very fluid shapes with incredible accuracy”, says Harrison.

The new Robert Plumb Ribbon Range and Swisspearl collection are displayed at the Sydney showroom, located at 55 Cranbrook Street, Botany NSW 2019.
