Located in Lambersart, Lille, in a neighbourhood famous for imposing residences and well-designed villas sits an architectural gem that was in need of a polish. When Guillaume Gibert and Baptiste Rischmann of RMGB Agency discovered the bourgeois home, they looked to restore the apartment to its former glory after a renovation had completely altered the harmony of the place.

Building on the villa’s existing architectural qualities, vintage pieces are elegantly added to offer a relaxed atmosphere—with a modern touch. Retaining the original floor plan, spaces are now connected and solid timber frames are painted in the same shade as the walls to create a sense of openness and visual cohesion. Only the window panes keep their original patina, a wink by RMGB to the original design.

Floors are ripped up to reveal now reinstated parquetry and carpets reappear in rooms as they were when the house was built. The original staircase with an intricately patterned Art Deco balustrade was lovingly rehabilitated by specialty craftsmen.

RMGB made sure all the elements in the kitchen were preserved, lemon tiled walls and geometric flooring contrast with a dining nook reupholstered in a pale pink fabric, colour matched with the Katinka Lampe painting above. In the living room an original sofa is restored, reminiscent of the work of Robert Mallet-Stevens. Upholstered in natural linen, the duo also extended this to the rounded and relaxed Boomerang lounge chairs by Italian designer Rodolfo Bonetto sitting adjacent.

Guillaume and Baptiste used vintage furniture mainly from the 1960s to the 1980s, putting in extensive research to find just the right pieces—like a rare pair of Bernard Govin armchairs in the small lounge and an old sink, stored in the cellar for decades, that the duo carefully reinstalled.

There is a hotel-esque luxury to the home, with all four upstairs bedrooms having a personal en suite—the master with the largest of them all, befitting the grand room with a bow window and private sitting area. Identity crisis no more, this Villa shakes off the cobwebs and gets its groove back with a restrained renovation by RMGB.
