Finally a solution for those born without a green thumb but with an inherent dislike of fake plants. REM atelier, a collaborative art and design studio based in Rotterdam, has taken an interesting approach to indoor plant life. They produce big scale interactive installations exploring spatial boundaries and meanings. The objects and installations created by artist Remty Elenga and designer Remco van Halderen are an investigation into functionality and décor.Growing Plants Indoors has been an on-going or dare one say it, an on-growing project for the pair. A three-dimensional, layered depiction of the plant is placed into a light box. When the light shines through the thin green leaves, the representation becomes hyper realistic. The plant leaves the suggestion of being alive, trapped behind milky Plexiglas in its wooden casing.Every lightbox is unique, as each plant inside one is based on a different photograph of a real life banana plant.“The works not only decorate a living space, they simultaneously question the way we decorate our living space. And more precisely; how we take the outside world in, containing a piece of nature between the walls of our own habitat,” said the designers.A plant that can’t die, can’t be over fed, can’t be under or over watered – truly music to the ears of those whose well intentioned administrations over the years have diminished the life span of their beloved house plants. These plants frozen in time within their picture frame sarcophagus are immune to our consultations. All they really need from humans is an electricity source, the rest they’ll sort out for themselves. Amen to that.
