When it comes to furniture design, this young Brazilian is totally smashing it out of the ballpark. Pedro Paulo Venzon has a unique style and has been producing minimalist objects and furniture since 2011. He combines Brazil’s love of colour and vivacity with simple and clean lines that come from a more modernist and pragmatic perspective.

Let’s take the Pudica Chair, one of his minimalist, metal chairs. If the striking, geometric angles don’t grab you and have you lusting to have one of your own, then the polished metal will. The choice of carbon steel and solid brass is a nod to the prevalence of steel manufacturing used in furniture in Brazil in the 50’s. The simple curves and aesthetic shapes of his furniture are merged from two different periods, the early 20th Century and the Brazilian colonial experience. There’s a simple economy to his work with its smooth curves and crisp lines. So it’s hardly any wonder he’s been raking in the awards both at home and overseas.

But it’s not just shapes, colours and materials he’s interested in. He’s actively involved in the discussions around modern and contemporary design in Brazil and his pieces of furniture and objects are a reflection of that.

His focus is “between the authorial and industrial, the local and the global, between tradition and its displacements.”

Brazil has always produced exceptional furniture design talent, from Sérgio Rodrigues to Joaquim Tenreiro. With their experimental practices and artistic merit, they and others have put Brazil on the design map. Pedro Paulo Venzon has become in no uncertain terms a must-know Brazilian furniture designer of today’s era. Brazil’s design map spot is in good hands – we know Venzon will be keeping it safely in its place.
