Bibu Pet Store by One Fine Day Studio & Partners.

A Pet Store levels up in this new project by One Fine Day (OFD) studio, set within a high-end condo Gaode Mansion in Guangzhou, China. The project looks to the Space Age to create an interior that stands in striking contrast to the usual functionalism of pet shops.

The sci-fi classic “2001: A Space Odyssey” was the main inspiration for the ensuing theatrical atmosphere. LED lights with a nod to the iconic glowing floor in the film, stretch out from the first floor, linking the entire venue. OFD also explored the film’s spatial aesthetic to blend classic and contemporary, inserting vintage furniture amongst its ultra-modern stylings.

It’s a retrofuturistic dreamscape with monolithic dome lights placed throughout, symbolising interstellar orbits, complemented by ergonomically rounded corners—that double as pet friendly. A spiral staircase blends brutalism with symmetrical aesthetics, anchoring the focal point of the atrium.

A stainless steel form perforated with almost half a million holes rises up through this pet store set within a 1933 Shanghai building—a tribute to the countless animals subjected to the former notorious slaughterhouse.

The tone is defined by colour. Various bright and dark hues weave a nostalgic tale. On the first floor, the herringbone tile floor sync with a multi-layered forest green. Moving upward, there is the eggshell white mezzanine consisting of a hallway and meeting rooms. While a touch of grey-tone-blue has been added in the second floor to establish a more hygienic environment for the vet.

Metallic lines in matte serve as a dynamic bond that brings all spaces together, outlining the futuristic frame of the venue. Spaces are accessorized by arranged square compartments, slim leg tables and tulip chairs reminiscent of sci-fi films. Those minimalistic and streamlined forms, which fascinated mid-century designers, have been captured by ofD, combined with functional purposes integrated into each area.

In this pet store, One Fine Day have certainly made a case for the enduring appeal of Space Age design—in any context.
