Danish green-tech brand Mater has just unleashed its first-ever lighting collection made from their patented waste material, Matek™. The Terra collection, designed by Copenhagen-based OEO Studio (who’ve been collaborating with Mater since 2006), comprises a pendant, wall lamp, and portable lamp that marry minimalist aesthetics with circular design principles.

Each piece contains up to 303g of waste materials—a blend of post-consumer e-waste from discarded electronics and coffee shell waste from Danish company BKI Foods.

This project pushes Matek™ into fresh territory. While Mater previously used this innovative material for chair seats and tabletops, creating smaller components required significant innovation. The result is a deceptively simple conical form that seamlessly integrates light sources, diffusion plates, and hardware without additional materials.

“The design draws inspiration from the possibilities offered by Matek™. It is minimalist, precise, and timeless,” explains Thomas Lykke, Head of Design and Founding Partner of OEO Studio. “The simple conical form is harmoniously balanced, contrasting beautifully with the tactile quality of Matek™.”

The collection comes in two colourways—Coffee Waste Black and Coffee Waste Red—both featuring a deliciously tactile finish that evokes natural materials like stone or wood. The wall lamp option includes a hardwired version for a floating appearance, while the portable lamp offers three brightness levels and up to 10 hours of illumination on a full charge.

These lights have already found a home at OEO Studio’s latest interiors project—SticksnSushi Battersea Power Station—where they create an earthy, cosy atmosphere whether arranged individually or in clusters.
