Nickolas Gurtler and his studio have transformed this cosmetic clinic in Western Australia, inspired by the classic Thierry Mugler ‘Angel’ perfume bottle—have a Google if you don’t recall, you’ll know the one. Working closely with the client, a new design language was developed alongside elevating the interior to an indulgent level of luxury more akin to a fashion boutique.

With the perfume bottle as a jumping-off point, the studio drew on its faceted angular forms, chrome detail and rich sky-blue tone as a starting point for a space. “I’ve been drawn to this bottle for over a decade—it completely transformed the perfume industry when it was launched, a symbolic connection to the industry-changing design we sought to achieve.” elaborates Nickolas.

In contrast to the sleek forms of the bottle, the studio took a balanced approach by introducing more honest and grounded elements like walnut, bronze, Belgian linen and travertine. Not only a link to the natural landscape, but the tones also offer a contrasting counterpoint to the more glamorous elements like a faceted mirror, Alpine Quartzite and Carrara marble.

Working with an unusual floor plan, the studio found a solution informed by a nautilus shell. This approach saw the creation of a central vestibule with spaces radiating out from the central core. The plan enhances the awkwardly located architectural elements—such as columns—by incorporating them as part of the design, rather than attempting to conceal them.

In the entrance, a pair of monolithic triangular stone forms act as the reception desk, made from rare Alpine Quartzite and Carrara Marble, flanked by a trio of bronze wall lamps by Lost Profile Studio. A faceted mirror column sits atop a walnut and charcoal velvet waiting bench. A monolithic angular coffee table made from Alpine Quartzite sits atop a pale denim silk carpet, anchored by a polished stainless artwork by artist Clementine Machonie.

Passing through a dramatic circular vestibule at the core of the clinic, treatment rooms are a change of pace. Putting clients at ease with warmer palettes of travertine and walnut and sophisticated joinery that feels almost residential whilst cleverly concealing all medical equipment.
