A series of sculptural wall lights and mirrors by Muller Van Severen made their debut at the Collectible Fair in Brussels this past May.

Established in 2011 by artists Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen, Muller Van Severen practice naturally sits between design and art. The duo’s new collection, dubbed Frames, explores how, by cutting and folding a steel plate, openings and depths are created that leave room for various functions such as lighting and mirrors, while making the connection between reality and the imaginary. The closed and open structures are accentuated by light sources or by bringing colour and material forwards and backwards as an object emerges from a flat plate.

The collection is a continuation of Muller Van Severen’s love of materiality. The simple, industrial design reflects the true composite sense of steel. “Our love of materials is the starting point for many of our designs,” explains the duo. “We continually search for new ways to showcase the natural beauty of our materials and strive to let the materials speak for themselves, without concealing anything.”

With Frames, Muller Van Severen create a fictional world of images with alternative, intrinsic meanings and possibilities.
