Swiss architecture firm Rippmann Oesterle Knauss (ROK) recently completed the MRQT Stuttgart boutique. The stand-out feature of this streetwear store is a textured wall made up of 22,000 individual timber dowels. The minimal interior features white walls and a concrete floor to contrast with the feature wall. A range of clothing is hung on metal rails against the textured wall backdrop which references flowing fabric. “The installation refers to the flowing forms and delicate texture of textiles and cloth. It creates a unique and sensational background for the fashion items displayed on the smoothly integrated clothes hangers. The flow of wooden sticks and subtle lighting frames a central full height mirror and forms a central ‘stage’ for the customer.” To conceive the overall shape of the installation, and master the large number of sticks, the wall was designed using customised digital tools. CNC-drilled holes define the individual direction of each dowel. You might recall this post which features a similar wall made up of timber dowels. I love a good example of a common place material being transforming into a striking design installation. 10 points from me!Related posts on Yellowtrace: Innovative Surface Design by Giles Miller Studio. 3D Walls Made From Timber Dowels and Paper Pipes.
