Well, well, well… Times are a-changin. Who would’ve thought the day would come when our tongues would be wagging about a workplace interior – for a financial institution no less. Not me! But our friends at b.e architecture have delivered the goods in the latest office fit-out for Mortgage Choice in Melbourne, so here we are.Mortgage Choice is a time-honoured brand of finance brokers with hundreds of offices across Australia. The new branch in South Yarra aimed to create a distinct identity within the larger network, appealing to all generations. While quite refined, the office is more like a studio with a comfortable, relaxed aesthetic. Unique for a financial business, it has an open plan with the primary focus on two custom-made work stations designed as stand-alone furniture with steel up-lights at the centre.Where separation is necessary, steel-framed glass partitions form an executive office and casual conference rooms. The glazing is segmented with irregular banding of obscure glass, based more on a fabric design than a traditional steel window detailing, providing privacy and maintaining the open feel. The finishes and furnishings are an eclectic mix that is less about luxury and more about creating a memorable space. Grey rendered walls, dark timber joinery and plush silk carpeting create a richly textured backdrop. The furniture collection is varied, with finishes ranging in coloured velvet, leather, timber and blackened steel. The press release states that the said collection “feels as if it has been accumulated over time”. Hmmm… Personally, I’m struggling to see that, but perhaps my idea of a collection that’s evolved over time is a lot more eclectic than other peoples’.The designers have paid close attention to lighting – it is warm, dimmable, with a preference towards accent lamps which create an inviting atmosphere. The choice of artwork further emphasises attention to detail in this fitout. Smart, sexy and sophisticated. That would be ten points from me.
