For this year’s Salone Del Mobile, Molteni&C presented a momentous showcase, an evolution of their concept of ‘Home’ for 2023. The Milan showcase is a precursor to the brand’s first flagship in Australia, set to open in Melbourne this June. The legacy Italian brand, founded in Milan in 1934, united the connected living of the past alongside technology and design innovation to inform the future of living. Its pavilion at Salone was as much about the architecture and concept of a modern home as it was about showcasing the fifteen pieces alongside a brand-new Outdoor Collection developed with signature visual rigour and functional design.Under the creative direction of Vincent Van Duysen, the showcase narrated the connection between indoor and outdoor, creating a link between intimacy and sharing within private and public spaces. “The home is once again the beating heart: conceived in a new guise—domestic, welcoming, and reassuring—it becomes a place to participate and share on the border between public and private. A home of noble simplicity and quiet grandeur,” explains Vincent Van Duysen, quoting the archaeologist JJ Winckelmann.A show of this magnitude is no surprise for the Italian designer furniture company, with over 80 years in the business and deep ties to Milan. From its inception in 1934, the values of impeccable quality, skilled craftsmanship, and attention to even the smallest details have positioned the brand at the highest level of luxury. Reaching back two thousand years to Ancient Rome, the Molteni&C’s Salone pavilion followed the domestic layout of the Domus, a type of dwelling favoured by Romans. Organised around a central courtyard, the Domus encouraged seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The Belgian creative director drew inspiration from the 1933 house designed and built by Pier Giulio Magistretti in Milan, which similarly integrates ancient and avant-garde elements.Rather than just showcasing new products, the brand took a more holistic approach, including pieces from the entire collection to build the idea of modern living. Within the collection, Van Duysen enters into a dialogue with key international players of architecture and design, from the architecture studio Herzog & de Meuron to the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa.Fifteen new products were presented for 2023, and a brand new Outdoor Collection was developed with a visual rigour and functional design. This year’s stand was as much about the architecture and concept of a modern home as it was about showcasing the collection. Highlights such as Porta Volta, the chair designed by Herzog & de Meuron, was created for the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem and transposed for the home environment, or Naoto Fukasawa’s Cinnamon armchair, with its playful, anthropomorphic forms, filled the space.Highlights From our Visit to Salone del Mobile. Classical references to the Roman Domus are also found in the artistic collaboration with Roberto Ruspoli, who interpreted the collection’s archetypes with his paintings. The work, titled ‘Virgil’s Dream’, created exclusively for Molteni&C, became the backdrop for the 2023 Collection’s new products. “Contours, lines, and anthropomorphic figures stand out in a monochromatic space, contaminated by ancient forms revisited with a modern twist,” Van Duysen says of Ruspoli’s work. “The classical gives way to the contemporary, in a stylistic ecstasy that breaks the patterns of space and time, to find itself in the here and now.”In keeping with the seamlessness between inside and outside, the Outdoor collection—made with 100% recyclable materials—was designed with the comfort of indoor settings with engineering specifically for the outdoors.Big Brand Furniture Stands at Salone Del Mobile 2015 // MILANTRACE2015.The fairgrounds in Rho were once again filled with thousands of exhibitors putting their best foot forward in showing us the future of the...
