#Milantrace2017, Milan Design Week & Salone Del Mobile 2017 Preview | Yellowtrace

Sometimes I wonder if we’re completely crazy doing what we do with Yellowtrace, and this feeling significantly intensifies in the lead-up, during and just after the annual Salone del Mobile & Milan Design Week. The sheer magnitude of this design event shocks me each year, and attempting to tackle the enormous beast in order to bring you the best without missing anything is a seriously daunting task which sometimes leaves me feeling paralysed. But then I snap out of it, pick myself up, brush off any dust and get on with it.

There is no doubt Salone is bigger than Ben-Hur, and giving you a full rundown of what you can expect from this year’s events is an impossible task. Having said that, I couldn’t help but share some of the products, events and installations of note to help you plan your Milan Design Week 2017 itinerary (or alternatively allow you to live vicariously through this list).

Catch you on the flip side! x

#Milantrace2017 Bloc studios presents Marble Matters Milan Design Week 2017 | Yellowtrace

Bloc studios presents Marble Matters // Curated by Bloc studios, “Marble Matters” is a project at the intersection of design, craftsmanship and sensorial perceptions, realised in collaboration with designer Sabine Marcelis and photographer Carl Kleiner. The pair have explored themes such as flowers interactions and light paths, both linked by the undiscussed material of Bloc Studios universe: marble and natural stones. Kleiner worked with Bloc studios to create “Posture Vases”, a collection where flowers are mounted on a construction of metal wires and marble bases. Marcelis presents the collection Voie Lights – The Stone Edition, the result of an investigation into the manipulation of light-paths, through the addition of an extra material as the marble.

A Matter of Perception – Linking Minds Exhibition at Palazzo Litta // The 2017 edition of ‘A Matter of Perception’ will see Mosca Partners and DAMN° return to Palazzo Litta together again with some of the most interesting protagonists in international design. The third edition of the exhibition will explore the theme of LINKING MINDS. Very often good ideas are generated by closed encounters and long lasting collaborations. The goal is to create an exhibition that extends from the creative process between two or more people. Ideas that grow from scratch through a mix of friendship, mutual trust and experience.

GOD – A project by Alberto Biagetti & Laura Baldassari, Curated by Maria Cristina Didero // Laura Baldassari and Alberto Biagetti of Atelier Biagetti continue their analysis of contemporary society’s greatest obsessions with another immersive, experiential design project, the third of the so called Biagetti saga, curated by Maria Cristina Didero. If in 2015 Body Building examined power and beauty through the seemingly skin-deep subject of the human body and NO SEX in 2016 addressed human psychology through the first basic element – sex, then the title of the 2017 project is a logical progression: GOD.

#Milantrace2017 Studio Ossidiana Petrified Carpets Fuorisalone 2017 | Yellowtrace

Petrified Carpets by Studio Ossidiana // ‘Petrified Carpets’ is a collection of concrete architectural objects inspired by the ideal garden found in Persian carpets. Experimenting with different techniques of casting, colouring, and texturing concrete, Studio Ossidiana has translated these elements into tactile concrete forms. Through the collaboration with high-end prefabricated concrete manufacturer Hurks, the objects expose the lively and bright character of a material that has, in the building industries, progressively lost its expressive potential. The project combines pigments, stones, sand and cement in different ratios in each object, making reference to the contours, tones, and shades of gardens.

Laurent Collection by Lambert & Fils // In keeping with its foundations, Lambert et Fils Studio drew from the past to create Laurent, its most contemporary collection to date. The initial inspiration was Marianne Brandt’s classic milk globe, designed at the Bauhaus. The Laurent Collection distills the milk globe to its essential relationship between circle and sphere. A series of thin forms compliment the Laurent globes — forms that carve through space, moving between line, surface, and volume. The Laterna Magica exhibition by Lasvit // The Laterna Magica exhibition builds on the mutual relationship between objects, light and space, while looking at glass from an architect’s point of view. The name is derived from an early type of image-projector developed in the 17th century. The device used hand-painted sheets of glass, a lens and a bright light source to project images. Using video mapping, Lasvit simulates this principle through glass objects and light to tell the unique stories of artistic visions revealed through glass.

INFINITO by Davide Groppi // INFINITO is the third and last episode of the Davide Groppi trilogy that deals with the fundamental state of light. #Milantrace2017 LuceplanSol_03 by Daniel Rybakken Euroluce 2017 | Yellowtrace

Sol_03 by Daniel Rybakken for Luceplan // The successful collaboration between Daniel Rybakken and Luceplan continues, after bringing the Milan-based company two Compasso d’Oro awards, in 2014 with the Counterbalance lamp, and in 2016 with Ascent. For the 29th edition of Euroluce, Luceplan presents Sol_03, an evocative lighting solution of great visual impact. Halfway between design and art, Sol_03 has a decorative character that conceals surprising technological complexity. “The Sol 03 project is about making a pendant light that occupies a large physical space with a minimal physical volume, for easy orientation in space. A translucent white film or a metallised mirror membrane is stretched inside a circular aluminium profile. Like a solar sail, an incredibly powerful light source projects a beam of light onto the large, almost weightless disk, either diffusing or reflecting the light. Thin rods connect the two main elements together. By altering the length and the connecting points of the two supporting wires the rotation of the disk can be set in any angle.”
