Joanna Laajisto Creative Studio has designed the new interior of restaurant Michel, a renovation and concept change of an old hospitality institution in the heart of Helsinki´s shopping district. “The objective was to create a comfortable and casual interior that fits the surrounding neighbourhood,” explains Joanna. Materials of high quality were selected to stand the test of time. Solid ash, custom panelling, cognac leather upholstery, white Statuario marble, stainless steel and brass details create a stylish but relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is located downstairs to the sensational Le Roy Nightclub, also designed by Laajisto and her team.

The green timber wall paneling references the traditional outdoor kiosk from the 1940´s, which can still can be found around Helsinki. The tabletops with green marble insets are all custom design for the restaurant. Two large round marble Tulip tables, designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, are design classics from the 1950´s. The beech timber seating and bar stools are by Andrew World. The brass sconces on the tiled walls and downstairs bathrooms are by French manufacturer Atelier Areti. Other decorative light fixtures are by Swedish manufacturer Rubn and Danish &Tradition.

In the brand new basement bathrooms marble and grey plaster walls with dimmed lighting create a pleasant ambiance. The custom sinks are designed to look like pieces of furniture by Laajisto. Faucets and other fixtures are by Danish brand Vola.

To highlight the long history of restaurants in the building, an original artwork “Bil Aktie Bol” by one of the former loyal customers, famous Finnish artist Akseli Gallen Kallela, is
placed in a central location in the restaurant.
