Reception. 123 Architects’ Masquerade Photography Studio in Beijing completely defies any conventions that once informed photographic studio design. A futuristic playground was created in place of another typical white atelier – the colourless, rigid walls which once made up studio spaces now injected with vibrant energy and personality.A 480 square metre existing industrial building has been transformed into studio spaces that include accompanying meeting and dressing rooms. The scheme unfolds with the expansive scale and rhythm of an art gallery. Each space speaks with a different personality – as if each room entered, houses a different style of artwork, from white and minimalist to others fully illuminated by a soft blue glow. The existing language of the factory still remains intact under its new futuristic aesthetic. The original ceiling floats above, a soft homage to the previous use of the space. The brick façade stands as another reminder of what was, however of course – not without a twist. Bricks now curve away from the original flat façade. It’s new silver undulating arms a glimpse of the unusual space lying within. Facade. Entrance lobby. Entrance lobby. Entrance lobby. Reception. The experience of moving through this building can be likened to an explorative passage through an organically moulded cave. Only here the curving walls are dripped in pastel peach and futuristic pendant lighting is suspended from the ceiling. There is a sense of playful speculation on each turn.123 Architects have not just designed a building but a portal to another universe. Walls grow out of the ground like twisted trees. Bathrooms are wrapped in glittering silver, their interiors appearing to house small-scale raves rather than hand washing. The building becomes a completely immersive sensory experience, its unique interiors encouraging interaction and exploration.
