Casa MILC is located in the historic centre of Madrid, characterized by its narrow winding streets and organic layout. This area, rich in history, features a mix of small squares and unique buildings that contribute to the urban fabric. The residential building, dating back to the late eighteenth century, is situated near a square and adjacent to a convent. It exemplifies the traditional Madrid residential archetype, which was later replicated during the nineteenth-century Castro expansion.Kresta Design, led by Cristina Domínguez Lucas and Fernando Hernández-Gil Ruano, approached the project with a deep respect for its historical context while introducing contemporary elements that breathe new life into the interior. The centrepiece of the home is a large library, which serves as the heart of the space, greeting visitors and linking the private night area overlooking the inner courtyard with the public day area facing the street. The design features classic wooden flooring and joinery, complemented by contemporary textures and patterns that create fluid transitions through curved and folding shapes. This blend of old and new is particularly evident in the library, where book-covered walls provide a conceptual and spatial focal point, offering visual connections to other rooms, especially those overlooking the square.Three Pieces: Compact Madrid Apartment by Gonzalo del Val + Toni Gelabert.Sink your teeth into the zesty orange and grapefruit tones of this delightfully renovated apartment in the Spanish capital. These elements are further enlivened by sharp colours and modern features that invigorate the space. This careful balance between tradition and innovation ensures that the design remains cohesive and engaging.Fernando Hernández-Gil Ruano reflects on the design philosophy, stating, “Our goal was to maintain a constant dialogue between the elegant original structure and the new intervention. We introduced fresh elements that add a sense of distortion while ensuring harmony.” This philosophy is evident throughout the project, where each element is thoughtfully integrated to enhance the overall experience.CASA A12 Duplex House in Madrid by Lucas y Hernández-Gil.Nothing is predictable inside the Casa A12 Duplex House in Madrid, with the upper and lower levels encompassing completely different atmospheres shaped by contrasting geometry, colour and light.
