The 100sqm site had a dilapidated façade and interior features that restricted material choices for the designers. Additionally, they worked to a tight deadline of just three months for end-to-end conception and construction. Therefore, Sivak&Partners made straightforward and effective decisions. The client did not want to adhere to the popular ‘loft-style’ barbershop aesthetic, specifying no brick walls or hair style-related imagery. They also required the addition of a tattoo parlour and pedicure salon for men and women. A mezzanine level was added as a place for which customers could relax on sofas while waiting, as well as housing a technical room.“There was no time to come up with complex and experimental design solutions, there was no time for error,” explain the designers. “When you work in a very accelerated mode, there is no time to doubt yourself, you immediately draw a clear line without trembling in your hand.”The walls and ceiling are covered in rough-textured decorative plaster, saving time on having to prepare the walls for a classic paint job. The designers were unable to place any heavy material on top of the original timber floors, so the plaster also covers the floors, creating a seamless grey shell. Geometric LED panels are strung from the ceiling and spaced evenly across the barbershop floor. Stainless steel workstations, inset mirrors and grey leather upholstery on the barber chairs round out the monochrome palette.A monolithic dark grey marble reception desk is enhanced by a shiny stainless steel dividing panel. Hair products are displayed decoratively across it on floating shelves. In the waiting room, matte black furnishings contrast the pale grey walls, while black-framed textured glass screens provide privacy for tattoo and treatment rooms.
