Nestled within Helsinki’s famed Hakaniemi market hall, Kirsikka Restaurant is an ode to the city’s rich history and vibrant culinary scene. With Ville Relander at its helm and an interior brought to life by the local design practice KOKO3, Kirsikka marries tradition and modernity in a 250-square-metre culinary oasis.

Perched on the hall’s upper floor, Kirsikka invites diners in the warm embrace of the afternoon sun, pouring through its towering windows. It’s a place where time slows down, and the bustling market below seems a world away. What makes Kirsikka unique is its distinction as the market hall’s first-ever restaurant to cater to diners beyond regular hours, enveloping patrons in an atmosphere steeped in history.

The heart of Kirsikka’s design philosophy lies in its deep respect for the hall’s historical and cultural significance. Every detail pays homage to the market hall’s heritage. Orange-striped banquet benches pay playful tribute to traditional market stalls.

The bar, once a cobbler’s workshop, retains its original storefront, now serving up delightful drinks. Vintage Nikari chairs invite guests to joyful evenings, while granite tabletops from Rantamäki add a touch of domestic charm to the dining experience.

Yet, Kirsikka is not just a museum of history; it’s a vibrant canvas of modern Finnish art and design. Collaborating closely with Ville Relander, the interiors come alive with the soulful expression of art, enhancing the overall dining experience. The restaurant’s centrepiece, Anssi Kasitonni’s ‘Nunc Est Bebandum’ metallic sculpture adds a humorous touch.

In every corner, Kirsikka offers an immersion into Finnish culture, celebrating the essence of the nation’s art, cuisine, and spirit. The restaurant offers more than just a meal, but a journey through time and taste, and a delightful exploration of Helsinki’s heart and soul.
