Japanese designer Kazuhiro Yamanaka has designed Pizza Box Lamp, a polyester floor lamp that nods to Ingo Maurer’s 1980 Lampampe. Made out of 100% recycled polyester fibre, each layer is crinkled to create a unique pattern and add strength.

The lighting fixture is playfully packaged in a cardboard pizza box, that when opened gently unfolds to stand freely without any supports and emitting a gentle LED glow. “As the box is opened, the lamp begins to gently unfold due to the elasticity of the material and the compact packaging,” Kazuhiro explains. “As it is completely propped up by hand, it is able to stand freely without any internal structure.”

Available in two sizes, each variation is packaged compactly inside a cardboard box to cut down on environmental destruction caused by transportation. The Polyester fibre is made by recycling used PET bottles and has the same level of purity as raw material made from petroleum, making effective use of existing resources.

“Because the paper is made of polyester, it has higher water resistance than ordinary pulp paper. It is also possible to make creases because of its strength, flexibility and paper-like texture that cannot be expressed with normal paper or film,” Kazuhira elaborates.
