Two years after the first Rugosa Collection, Kalon has collaborated with fellow LA-based design studio, Reath Design. The two studios present a brand new limited release of custom upholstery for the Rugosa Sofa, Rugosa Daybed and Rugosa Chair.

Initially released in 2020, Kalon’s Rugosa Collection is the synthesis of many years of conversations exploring the evolving function and spirit of the living room. Inspired by the Narragansett home, from which the collection takes its name, Rugosa was designed to invite comfort—both communal and solitary.

Drawing from the vast catalogues of Alexander Girard, Rose Cumming, and the Warner Textile Archive, the new collection pushes the limits of juxtaposition and harmony. Against a backdrop of clean-lined Modernist forms, the textile selection of florals, stripes, and checks inject an undeniably eccentric and nostalgic flair to Kalon’s designs.

New Miami-based digitally-native platform to commission, produce and showcase cutting edge design, unveils its first project—a capsule collection by the principals of Atelier Caracas.

“We wanted to evoke the feeling of a family summer house with multiple generations co-existing,” Frances Merrill of Reath Design elaborates. “A combination of patterns from the late 1800s, 1920s/30s, and 1960s evoke the sense of a generational accumulation of textiles, colours, and perspectives—much like a house accumulates naturally over time.”

Departing from the oft-austere impulse of minimalism, these exuberant pieces evoke a bold generosity of spirit and mood of lived-in creativity.
