Jean-Baptiste Fastrez has teamed up with French design house Moustache to create the Gelato chair and Sphera mirror system. You might say it’s a match made in heaven with the two parties sharing a wit and playfulness when it comes to engineered design. After working under Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec straight out of school, Jean-Baptiste set up his own studio in 2011. Working out of Paris, he is best known for combining handcrafted and mechanised production to reinterpret and improve everyday objects creating, in his own words, “enriched objects”.With the Spera collection, the designer revives the once-popular mirror bracket. The technical device that was used in the first half of the 20th Century for creating mirror walls has since been reduced to its sole function—and today is no more than a kind of mirror attachment sold in the bathroom section of DIY shops. Sphera revives the decorative tradition of this invisible technical element by giving it an unexpected sculptural dimension and unprecedented flexibility. With 14 models to choose from, the design object offers an infinite range of possibilities.Moustache Presents 'Favoris' at Paris Design Week 2015.Rather than diminish the quality of the pieces on show, the run-down nature of the old Parisian apartment only drew focus onto the design at hand... Fluid and slender, the piece has an imposing sculptural presence reinforced by a stark contrast with a geometric pedestal, into which the body of the chair is anchored to form a single unit. Beyond being comfortable—which it is—its unofficial function is as a thought-provoking piece that enters into a conversation with the space.Made in France, the chair uses recycled materials and zero-waste manufacturing techniques. Not just a sculptural piece it’s also practical—with an invisible zip, the seamless cover is easy to remove, can be machine washed and put back on like a fitted dress with a zip at the back. The fun part? If after choosing the Blueberry tone today you decide tomorrow to re-dress it with the Lime, you can always order it and change it yourself in less than 5 minutes! Customisation at its best.A Concrete Canvas for Contemporary Art: Oever Gallery in Ostend by 5AM Studio. The material mix of raw concrete, rough stucco, polished mirror, brushed aluminium and high-gloss alongside Moustache chairs offers contrast...
