In Constant Evolution: M.A.D. Creative Hub by Ivy Studio.

Ivy Studio has completed a new office space for M.A.D. Collectif, a Montreal-based creative agency that has been organising fashion, art and design-related events worldwide for over 20 years.

The scheme focuses on delivering a flexible space for work and meetings, as well as fashion events, art exhibits and pop-up shops. This inspired a ‘work in progress’ aesthetic, where the interior feels like it is in a constant state of evolution.

“Things feel unfinished, so they can be moved, played with and modified at any moment. Raw construction materials are exposed and put forward rather than hidden behind finishes,” explain Ivy Studio. “The entire space is meant to become a canvas for the creative work completed by M.A.D. and their collaborators.”

The original building, built as a print shop in 1939 is very long with the only windows found on the front of the facade. By making little structural changes the studio-orientated public functions at the front and the more private areas to the back.

Fresh hues of mint, burgundy and psychedelic zinc passivity are splashed against a well-lit backdrop...

Existing walls, plumbing and ventilation equipment act as the base layer of the interior, all painted in white. In the public section of the space white ceramic tiles cover the sunken floor, travelling up part of the walls. As you travel further in, walls seem unfinished with exposed metal studs and candy pink fibreglass insulation encased in clear polycarbonate sheets.

Aside from the round tables made of galvanised steel, all of the furniture is meant to contrast with the unpretentious canvas of rough construction materials. The monolithic marble counter stands out against the white environment with its bold veins and striking volcanic colours. The long curved banquette covered in metallic purple velvet is accompanied by pink and orange pouffes scattered throughout the floor. Even the typically modest shop stools and hay chairs are finished in bright lilac and deep forest green.
