Strolling along the banks of the Tiber River in Rome, you can feel the echoes of history intertwine with the vibrant energy of modern life. The eternal city is a treat for the senses. Among its chaos, food, fountains, and charm is the LD Apartment by Incognito Studio, designed in collaboration with Emmylou Verhaegen.

This home is a testament to the possibilities of design where flexibility and movement go hand in hand in creating a home that evolves with the cadence of life. Within its 90 square meters, this apartment seamlessly merges the living room, kitchen, and bedroom, crafting a unified style that embraces simplicity.

“At the heart of this spatial narrative is a commanding architectural feature—the concrete beam,” explains the architect, “a horizontal sentinel that anchors the space with quiet authority.” Alongside it, the steel column rises boldly, a vertical statement that challenges convention and draws attention. This detail of the offset column is quirky and unusual, and yet it totally works. Together, these elements form the backbone of LD’s design, supporting a space that is both modern and timeless.

Beyond its distinctive structure, the apartment is a canvas where raw materials and clean geometries converge. Timber, concrete and steel combine, resulting in contrast and harmony, as well as depth and character. The southern wall, dressed in pristine white, serves as a backdrop, allowing light, shadows and nature to take centre stage. Whereas the northern wall becomes a celebration of life’s daily rituals where the warmth of timber meets the terracotta tiles, “creating a harmonious environment that resonates with both functionality and aesthetics.”

As sunlight floods through the apartment’s expansive windows, the space comes alive with a warm glow, casting intricate patterns that dance across the walls like works of art in motion. It’s evident that every design move is intentional, and every detail is an invitation to explore and discover.

In LD Apartment, the spirit of Rome is present, weaving its magic into every corner and crevice, reminding us that beauty lies not only in the grandeur of monuments but also in the quiet elegance of everyday life.
