Community and Comfort Come Together in This Hybrid Workspace by House of Grey.

This warm and nurturing workplace in London’s Shoreditch has been reimagined with the help of House of Grey. Working closely with the clients, the studio looked to create an environment that would bridge the gap between home and work to offer the comfort of a living space matched with the creative stimulation people hope to find in the workplace.

“Whilst the option of remote working provides flexibility, it doesn’t provide the integral connectedness we intrinsically need,” Founder of House of Grey, Loiusa Grey explains. “The workspace itself plays a big part in creating a sense of community and contentment for people.”

Louisa and her team looked to their own hybrid home and design studio ‘House of Holism’ for inspiration. Emulating its comfort and warmth, it was also important to create a space that was flexible and could adapt and flow daily—for work in teams, one-to-one meetings and open-plan arrangements.

The studio aimed to work with non-toxic, natural resources and materials that have been harvested directly from the earth. In the reception, for example, House of Grey collaborated with Natural Material Studio on hanging algae panels. They also worked with Ty Syml who made lampshades from seaweed and Chalk Path Studio who worked with recycled paper and other natural materials to create artisan lighting. Through this intuitive design process, the space has been approved as a Breeam Excellent Certified building.

The final outcome is a space that offers the comfort and contentment that can be felt at home—to nurture a work-life balance and avoid burnout. “On a deeper level, our intention from the outset is that this space nourishes its workplace community, and offers its inhabitants satisfaction and contentment on a daily basis,” Louisa concludes.
