Treviso based Italo-British lighting duo Giopato & Coombes has launched their Moonstone lighting collection, originally presented during Milan Design Week 2019.Inspired by lunar rock sculptures, and evoking primordial talismans, the collection conveys moonlight poetry for everyday life, bearing positive energy and ancient wisdom. This collection of pendant lamps is inspired by organic rock sculptures – lights are available in horseshoe-shapes, oval-forms, elongated or facet domes, reaching up to 140cm in diameter.“Our imagination travelled to an uncontaminated planet of rocky landscapes, swept by powerful winds,” said Cristiana Giopato and Christopher Coombes. “On a black canvas of outer space, a lunar panorama of dust, craters and rocks responded to the wind’s motion. We were surrounded by energy and movement: sand whizzing around us, rocks rolling on the moon’s surface. Chunks of brass, crystal and dust left the ground, twirling amongst us in a creative frenzy. Only then did we realize that our fantasy was generating shapes out of moonstone, envisioning surreal lamps cast out of the purest and perfect ‘lunar’ materials deriving from our worldly experience.” Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 09 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 08 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 10 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 11 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 12 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 03 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 04 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 05 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 01 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 02 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 06 Giopato Coombes Moonstone Lighting Design Yellowtrace 07 Giopato&Coombes’ design research always follows an unexpected path. In this case, it led the duo to listen and embrace the material itself. “We carved Moonstone out of strong, handmade fibreglass, infused with marble powder to create a composite stone-like material protecting its surface, and of ‘battuto’ Murano glass or linen glazed diffusers, depending on its size,” explains the duo.The lamps emit a soft, down-streaming light flow, while their opaque, faceted silhouettes become sculptural when teased by rays of light. The stems are composed of brushed brass rods enclosing white fabric cables. For more information, visit giopatocoombes.com.
