Melbourne jeweller Melanie Katsalidis has opened her first-ever dedicated retail store in the city’s iconic Royal Arcade. Located beneath the building’s Gaunt’s Clock, the interior was created in collaboration with her close friends at Foolscap Studio.

Inspired by the conceptual idea of ‘Future Histories’, Foolscap took a sensitive adaptive reuse approach to the design by repurposing elements of the former space. Calm, natural materials reign throughout, used in rich and refreshing ways—from nude-toned fabrics to custom terrazzo and concrete sculptures that double as display plinths. “Each material has its own properties and past stories bound together in one space, to tell a new story,” explains Foolscap’s director, Adèle Winteridge.

Jewel-like in size, the store creates an experience of wonder and discovery through its natural material palette and artfully playful, bespoke display pieces. At the centre of the space sits a riveting Ripple Bench sheathed in vivid blue neoprene, custom designed by Foolscap.

Other features include a custom handmade sculptural pendant light by Melbourne-based designer Brahman Perera, a collection of hand-cast concrete sculptural objects by Five Mile Radius, and handmade furniture pieces such as the steel base table. The fresh design is a Melbourne affair, championing all things locally made and handcrafted in a reflection of the store’s own origins.
