‘The Bull Charges for the Moon.’ ‘A Wrestle Between Two Curvy Bears The Blue Firefly Lights.’ ‘The Bear Hibernating Under Winter Boulders.’ ‘The Performance of Four Slick Baby Spiders.’ ‘The Snowy-Capped Volcano Screams Lava.’ ‘The Squid Eyes a Prize.’ Sydney-based artist and designer Evi O. presents her debut solo show ‘Fantasia’ during Sydney Contemporary with Paddington gallery Saint Cloche. Colour is a signature for both the art and design practice that Evi O. leads, with outcomes ranging from artworks, books, objet d’art and homeware pieces. Her exploration of forms, functions and executions are multi-dimensional, and bodies of work are presented with spatial experience in mind. For Fantasia, Evi’s medium of choice is paint, with 2D colour-blocking shapes evoking stirring slices of life, some experienced, some observed. The topics are a melodic recurrence of high-strung joy and softer laments, referencing people encountered, places visited, and episodes sensed.Such tales are conveyed through compositions of abstract shapes, using colour to amplify energy. Hot pink, bright orange and electric blue sit boldly beside one another in one painting, while another takes a more subtle tack comprising pale pink and olive green. Characters are symbolized through recurring abstract forms evocative of animals, objects and nature. The fabulous Ms Evi O. Each artwork title is both descriptive and conceptual, peppered with hints of real-world emotions, connected through a poignant time of the artist’s life yet imbued with a sense of romance. They include ‘A Stalk of Magical Grapes’, ‘The Viper Enclosed in a Field of Pink Rocksalt’, and ‘Voluptuous Arrangement for a Feast by the Garden’.Evi O. has been designing since 2008 and exhibiting since 2015, with her award-winning design practice entering its third year. Her work is born from a desire to express her creativity and stories without boundaries and limitations. Her wit and curiosity for life result in art and design objects pervaded with happiness.Helmed by director Kitty Clark, Saint Cloche is a contemporary gallery with a mission to support the work of established artists while also providing a platform for fresh talent to present their ideas to the world.Fantasia will exhibit with Saint Cloche at Sydney Contemporary from September 12 – 15.
