At The Gates.

My oh my. These beautiful works have me feeling all warm and fuzzy. Elise Wehle is an American artist who creates intricate collages assembled with layers of old prints and photographs. These are carefully cut, folded and woven into mesmerising works which depict expressive portraits and landscapes. Beautiful textures and patterns adorn her work. At a first glance, some of them appear as old frescoes found inside European heritage buildings. Swoon.

Wehle’s work is deliberately textural and analogue by nature. I am equally in love with her art as I am with the sentiment behind it.

The Woman Bouguereau Painted.

“I make the art I do to pull me away from the increasingly digital world that surrounds me. Every day I spend so much time in front of a glowing screen that sometimes I forget I possess five bodily senses and not just one or two.”

In The Garden.

“Making art makes me conscious of my hands again, and all of my work requires time-intensive, redundant movements that remind me that not everything is as instantaneous as a click of a mouse. By weaving together paper, cutting lines, and folding shapes, I manipulate drawings, photos, and prints to create new landscapes for me to explore.
