The store is the brainchild of Comme des Garçons‘ Rei Kawakubo, who has conceived the overall interior concept, also designing the common areas, changing rooms and some of the installations that feature throughout the store. Kawakubo was keen to “embrace and enhance” the building’s original features, and as a result the exterior, original ceilings, windows, and central staircase remain untouched. All the major brands within the store were given the freedom to design their own dedicated spaces to suit their needs. Jeweller Repossi, for example, enlisted the help of architect Rem Koolhaas of OMA, while milliner Stephen Jones created a structure of interlocking chairs to display his pieces. Lighting designers Thierry Dreyfus, Daniel Young, Christian Giroux and Pedro Cabrita Reis were also brought on board to create illuminating installations for the space. As is the case with the previous location, the popular Rose Bakery also finds a spot in the new Dover Street Market store, situated on the top floor of the building.
