Danielle Brustman has injected her playful sensibility into a new interior fit-out for sustainable hair salon Mitch in Melbourne. The salon had set up residence in the space for a few years and it was time to upgrade the interior to align with their brand, ethos and aesthetic. “Mitch recycle 98% of their wastage! Even the hair gets composted,” Danielle explains. The palette was kept pretty simple—white walls, yellow glass partitions, mustard and white glass mosaic tiles from ArteDomus and hand coloured oak joinery.“We started with colour. Yellow to be exact—the signature colour for the brand. We have used varying shades of the colour across a range of materials including glass, timber and tile,” the designer elaborates. Bespoke station mirrors are shaped like water droplets yet the piece de resistance is a 70s inspired six-arm chandelier from LA-based bespoke lighting brand Entler Studio that sits at the front reception desk above a split level bespoke lounge. The interior was as Danielle describes “a little flat and tired”.To give the salon the face-lift it needed Newpol Construction was enlisted to help. They stripped back the floor to the original concrete and went about installing cutting and wash stations, a new reception and retail area along with a second-floor salon equipped with hair and wash stations, a hand-painted mural, Daniel Emma wall lights and a workstation table for clients to work on their laptops while having their hair dying done. The owner had one ultimatum — that greenery play a central part within the space, Danielle continues “Plants were a key part of the brief as Tara has been collecting some spectacular indoor plants that her clients had fallen in love with.” The perfect final touch for this bright and open salon.
